A soft, buttery yeast bread swirled with a sweet poppy seed filling, perfect for pulling apart and sharing. This comforting bake is ideal for cozy mornings or afternoon tea.

Ingredients

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk, warm (110°F)

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)

2 large eggs

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (plus more for brushing)

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup poppy seeds

1/4 cup sugar (for filling)

2 tbsp unsalted butter (for filling)

1 tbsp honey or 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, 1/3 cup sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until frothy (5-10 mins).
  2. Make Dough: Mix in eggs, softened butter, and salt. Gradually add flour and knead until smooth (8-10 mins).
  3. First Rise: Cover and let dough rise in a warm place until doubled (1 to 1.5 hours).
  4. Prepare Filling: In a small saucepan, melt 2 tbsp butter with poppy seeds, 1/4 cup sugar, and optional honey/vanilla. Stir and let cool.
  5. Roll Dough: On a floured surface, roll dough into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Spread & Roll: Spread filling evenly. Roll dough tightly and slice into equal rounds.
  7. Second Rise: Arrange slices in a buttered dish. Cover and let rise again (30-45 mins).
  8. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with butter and bake 25-30 mins until golden.
  9. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm.
