Ingredients

6 large russet potatoes

6 tablespoons butter

1 cup sour cream

1 cup milk or heavy cream

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

2 tablespoons chopped chives or green onions (for garnish)


Instructions

1. Peel and cube the potatoes. Boil them in salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain well.

2. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl. Mash using a masher or ricer. Add butter, sour cream, and milk.

3. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy.

4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a casserole dish. Spread the mashed potato mixture evenly into it.

5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar on top if using.

6. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and heated through. Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end if desired.

7. Remove from oven and let rest for a few minutes. Garnish with chives or green onions. Serve warm.

Notes

For extra creamy texture, use a hand mixer after mashing the potatoes.

To make ahead, assemble the casserole fully and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking.
