Easy Patty Melt Recipe

  • Author: Olivia McKenney

Description

This Easy Patty Melt combines juicy ground beef, gooey melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions between buttery grilled bread. It’s a diner favorite you can make easily at home for a melty, crisp, flavor-packed sandwich everyone will love.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

4 slices Swiss or American cheese

4 slices rye bread or Texas toast

2 tbsp butter (for grilling)

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Instructions

1. In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tbsp butter and add sliced onions. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using. Shape into 2 oval patties to fit your bread slices.

3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.

4. Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, layer cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and the top slice of bread (buttered side out).

5. In a clean skillet, cook the sandwiches over medium heat. Press gently and grill each side for 3–4 minutes until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.

Notes

Let the onions cook low and slow for the deepest flavor and natural sweetness.

Butter the bread evenly to ensure a consistent golden crust.

Use a cast iron skillet if available for the crispiest result.
