Description
Classic Buttermilk Pie is a timeless Southern dessert made with simple ingredients like buttermilk, sugar, and eggs, creating a silky-smooth custard filling nestled in a flaky pie crust. It’s the perfect combination of creamy, tangy, and sweet — ideal for any occasion from family gatherings to holiday feasts.
Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges. Set the dish on a baking sheet for stability.
2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
4. Sprinkle in the flour and salt. Mix gently until fully incorporated.
5. Gradually stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
6. Pour the custard filling into the prepared pie crust.
7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still slightly jiggly.
8. Remove from the oven and cool completely on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature or chill in the refrigerator before slicing.
Notes
For an extra smooth filling, strain the custard through a fine mesh sieve before pouring it into the crust.
If the edges of your pie crust begin to brown too quickly, cover them with foil halfway through baking.
Let the pie rest at room temperature for at least an hour before refrigerating to prevent cracks.
