Christmas Eve Lasagna

  • Author: Olivia McKenney
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Description

This Christmas Eve Lasagna is rich, cozy, and crowd-pleasing—made with hearty layers of savory meat sauce, creamy ricotta filling, and melty mozzarella. It’s a make-ahead-friendly dish perfect for family gatherings and holiday meals, and it’s guaranteed to become a beloved tradition year after year.

Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 ounces crushed tomatoes

6 ounces tomato paste

2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 large egg

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese (divided)

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large sauté pan or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat. Once browned, drain excess fat if needed. Add chopped onions and cook until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 20–30 minutes to thicken and develop flavor.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 egg, ½ cup of Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt. Stir until smooth and set aside.

3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer with noodles, half the ricotta mixture, more meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers, finishing with meat sauce, mozzarella, and the remaining Parmesan cheese on top.

4. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top. Let the lasagna rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Letting the lasagna rest after baking is key for clean slices and perfect layering.

For a deeper flavor, simmer the sauce up to 1 hour if time allows.

You can prepare the full lasagna a day ahead—just refrigerate before baking and add 10–15 minutes to cook time.
